Brade Named Kansas City League Coach of the Year
Jefferson City Capitals varsity hockey coach Jack Brade has been named Coach of the Year for the 2007-2008 season by Kansas City Metro Area High School Hockey League Commissioner Joel Becker.
Becker chose Brade over Wichita's Mike Galvan and Rockhurst's Colby Lysne, who took their respective teams to the league championship series. "A certain amount of success is normally a good basis for Coach of the Year," Becker noted. "But winning a championship with the best team is not necessarily indicative of who the best coach is."
Becker says the deciding factor was that the Capitals were the only team to post an upset in the playoffs, in addition to a strong performance in a losing effort against Rockhurst. The Capitals eliminated the higher-seeded Springfield Spirit in the quarterfinal series, then took top-seed Rockhurst to overtime before losing the first semifinal contest. Jefferson City lost the second game 1-0.
"I would also add that his (Brade's) teams generally played with sportsmanlike attitudes and high levels of effort, both indicative of good coaching," Becker noted. He considered five coaches for the award, including Galvan, Lysne, Springfield's Mike Sorci, and Des Moines' Brian Blauw. "I think any of the five coaches...would have made fine choices as Coach of the Year. All had arguments in their favor. Ultimately, I felt that Jack helped his team achieve the most, based on their ability."
